Letter from the Editor - Spring 2008

The "well-lived life" can encompass many things; at its simplest, it is enjoying life to the fullest with those we cherish most. But as Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." And in this issue, we celebrate the power of giving.

Rachel Stephaich, whom we feature on our cover, embodies the true spirit of giving, from providing essential dental care to Indian tribes in the Amazon and the neediest poor in Haiti, to her latest undertaking: helping imperiled children in her native Brazil.

We also highlight a different sort of giving, but one just as powerful. Gail Ulager could never have imagined that something as simple as a nail appointment could change her life forever. She had struggled with kidney disease for years – only a transplant could save her life. Enter Paula Miksic, her manicurist, whose amazing gift ultimately transformed both women's lives.

Yet, Fanfare wouldn't be Fanfare if it didn't also bring you the very best in the arts and fashion. This spring, we introduce Pittsburgh style maven Bear Brandegee's "Personal Style." She's decking out the region's "It" men and women in the latest fashions, including her first subject, the tres chic Helen Hoey.

Here's a Fanfare to the power of giving, and to the life well-lived.
